about the instructor

"If I can do it, so can you." I know from my own birth experiences that a woman's body was designed to give birth spontan- eously, vaginally, naturally. I have never felt more powerful as I did after the natural birth of my first daughter Mae. more about Amy

hola!

i am starting a saturday morning class on june 19th.  i have never taught class on the weekends so this should be fun.  my daughter mae works at the farmer’s market and we head downtown around 6:45am. i’ll do my shopping and be ready to teach at 9:00.  i think it should work out splendidly!

we had our childbirth reunion party at the walnut woods lodge a few weeks ago…excellent turn out!  it was so nice to see all my amazing couples with their beautiful, sweet babies. everyone brought such fantastic food as well…good times!! my one year old daughter tula looked like a giant walking around and trying to sit in everyone’s car seats.
i end a class tonight and start a new one next week.  i have been keeping very busy which is great.  in june i will be starting a tuesday morning postpartum group…i can’t wait for that!

stay hydrated and when you are hungry reach for protein.

happy 2010!

Women’s bodies have near-perfect knowledge of childbirth; it’s when their brains get involved that things can go wrong.

love that quote!

stay warm.

birth is painful but it’s nothing like the pain you experience when you send your child off to kindergarten!!  brooks started kindergarten last week and he did great…i was a wreck.  i love spending time with my kids and i truly miss them when they are at school.  i have to remind their teachers how lucky they are that they get to spend the day with them!!

my hope is to help more postpartum families now that it’s just tula and i during the day.  i would also like to start a postpartum class.  mamas and/or dad’s and babies (birth to six months) could meet once a week for socializing, playing and a specific topic to discuss…breastfeeding, baby care, diapering, infant massage, vaccinations, co-sleeping, going back to work?…  i think i have the perfect space now and many new parents who might be interested!?

i am very excited to announce that i found a new space to teach class…we finished the studio behind our new house and it’s perfect for childbirth education!!  it has an eight foot chalkboard, a huge flat screen tv (perfect for birth films), cork floors, a twelve inch disco ball, a seven foot quilt and lots of personality. i am taking three weeks off but i can’t wait to break it in starting july 27th!!!
stay hydrated!!

happy birthin’!

our birth community is going through a lot of unfortunate changes.  dana ericson, CNM isn’t taking new clients, carey ryan, CNM isn’t practicing and the birth center is closed, cosette boone CNM is crazy busy.  pregnant women in des moines have very few options right now.  it’s all very sad and extremely overwhelming.

i know that women and their partners need to be educated especially now with fewer midwives to choose from.  if you are planning a hospital birth it isn’t enough to say that you want a natural birth…you must actively prepare and take control of your birth!!  challenges will come up and you and your partner must know how to respond!!!

i am starting a class in february, march, april and may so if you are pregnant and you want what is best for you and your baby think about signing up.  you can always email me with questions or comments.
happy birthin’!?
