before and after the birth

our birth community is going through a lot of unfortunate changes.  dana ericson, CNM isn’t taking new clients, carey ryan, CNM isn’t practicing and the birth center is closed, cosette boone CNM is crazy busy.  pregnant women in des moines have very few options right now.  it’s all very sad and extremely overwhelming.

i know that women and their partners need to be educated especially now with fewer midwives to choose from.  if you are planning a hospital birth it isn’t enough to say that you want a natural birth…you must actively prepare and take control of your birth!!  challenges will come up and you and your partner must know how to respond!!!

i am starting a class in february, march, april and may so if you are pregnant and you want what is best for you and your baby think about signing up.  you can always email me with questions or comments.

I DID IT!!  on november 30th at 10:30 a.m. i delivered all 6 lbs 11oz of margot tula murphy in the squatting position with no drugs!!!  i successfully VBACed (vaginal birth after cesarean) at iowa methodist hospital.  it was such an incredible experience. all three of my kids were there, my mom was there and of course tim was there!!!  things couldn’t be going better…she is delicious!!! i start teaching again february 23rd so watch out!!  i have so much to share about my latest experience!!

let’s see…right now i am 36-37 weeks pregnant and we all are getting very excited. i have shown my kids countless birth films to prepare them a little for this life changing event.

i’ve changed things up a bit. i am teaching a one night, two hour class on thursday, september 4th and a two week saturday morning class totaling eight hours. i hope this option will work since i will be taking some time off.

so much time has pasted!!! i have experienced some computer ‘complications’ and now things seem to be better!? my photo page still isn’t working but hopefully that will be fixed very soon.

right now i am just teaching a monday night class. i will start another class on tuesday, august 19th. i will be taking a rather large break after that because i am expecting my fourth babe in december. i am unsure when i will start my first class after the baby arrives. if you are due in 2009 send me an email and we can try to work something out.

things were a little crazy last week!!  my old .com domain is now owned by a man in indonesia.  i couldn’t help support him by paying him the big bucks that he required so i switched to a .org.  life could be worse!!??

i start a class tonight with only four couples…i haven’t had only four couples in almost four years!!?  my may class is already full so that’s good.

i am now teaching class in my living room instead of the barn.  i guess it’s nice not having to drive the two blocks!??  it’s not so much fun keeping my house clean for my monday and tuesday night guests but i’ll survive!?  i do like the fact that my couples get to meet my family.

i just finished reading born in the usa by marsden wagner, m.d. and i strongly encourage you to read it too!!  it was very sad and very empowering at the same time.  it talks about how our broken maternity system must be fixed so that women and children are put first!!  the book outlines what needs to change and how to go about it.  i’d like to think my class helps promote change in our community…there is so much more that needs to be done!!!!!!!!

things are going well…i have two great classes going and many one night classes planned as well.  i have been talking to quite a few VBACers and i am very excited to have some in class.  today lisha and joe had a wonderful drug free VBAC and i couldn’t be happier for them!!!  sherri and bradley had their first baby last week completely drug free…way to go!!  i am so proud of everyone who takes the time to get educated!!!
